About Don Clark

Greetings from The Basement. My name is Don Clark and I am a radio geek. Have been since I was a little buckaroo. I would spend night after night, listening to the little A.M. radio in my parents kitchen. Sometimes the only light in the room came from the dial, as I listened to stations from around the country. 35 plus years later, I'm still wearing headphones, and coaching today's broadcast talent to be their best and bring their best to the airwaves. I have programmed radio stations from the Midwest to the East Coast and back, including the Chicago market. I have won many awards for my work in Radio, but in 2010, I achieved my highest honor. The Spectrum Award for Broadcaster of the Year from the Indiana Broadcasters Association. I am also a Copywriter and a Voice Over Artist. Thank you for checking out donsbasementproductions.com, and let me know if I can help you with your Production or Voice Over project.

Welcome To Don’s Basement

One afternoon in the late 1960’s, I think it was a Tuesday, I was sitting in my parents basement in Mayville, WIsconsin, listening to WOKY out of Milwaukee. “Sunny 920, WOKY”, along with WCFL, “The Voice Of Labor” and WLS “Music Radio 89” in Chicago, were my go to Radio Stations. But, as most people were listening to the music, I was listening to the DJ’s, the “Voices on the Radio” that became the friends I had that I never met. Bob Barry, Jack Lee, David “Burnt Toast and Coffee Time” Haines, John “Records” Landecker and “Boogie Check”. As the sun went down, and some of the AM Radio Stations turned off or lowered their power, a new group of stations emerged, along with a new style of music that I never heard before. Blues and R&B, with artists like The Temptations, Four Tops, BB King, Muddy Waters and more, played by these new friends that I found on the Radio. Walt “Baby” Love on CKLW, Alison Steele “The Night Bird” in New York, Bobby Reno in New Orleans, and so many others. A world had opened up before me, and I was hooked. I was going to work in Radio. I became a student of the game, and began to study the stations and the music that they played.

On Friday, February 12, 1982, a lifelong dream came true. I was hired and given the key to a Radio Station in Waupun, WLKE AM/FM. It was 6:00a.m., and after puking in the garbage can because I was so nervous, I turned on the mic, and in a stammering voice, said “This is WLKE, AM 1170 and FM 99.5, Waupun, Wisconsin”. And with that, my Radio Career was off to an illustrious beginning. What was next was, as the song goes, “Town to town, up and down the dial”. WMMW, WSNG, WIOF, WCHU, WUPE, WUHN, WHYN, WPKX, WBEC, WOFM, WIZD, WZVN, and on and on. Packing up a U-Haul and “coming home to a place I’d never been before”.

I am one of the luckiest people on the planet. I set out to do something that I always wanted to do since I was a little buckaroo. With my Brother Bob as a mentor (a Broadcaster himself) I took my dream and ran with it. I met some of the most creative people, spent time with musicians from all walks of lfe, learned from some of the brightest minds in Broadcasting, and did things that most people only dream of. Today, 40+ years later, I’m still in it. Announcing, Consulting, Programming and loving every minute of it.

It’s the worst business I’ll never leave.

Don Clark is one of the most trusted broadcasters I know. Being in the television and radio business, I interact with consultants all the time.  Don is smart, brings business solutions to the table and is a creative force behind a microphone.  I would not hesitate to continue to hire Don full-time or as a consultant.
